"Great Sound - Fabulous Turntable"
Sylvania Model Exponent 4/40 self contained record player in very good used condition. This one probably dates to the late '60s - early '70s.
Sylvania installed English made Garrard turntables in their record players at that time (Magnavox had a deal with the made in England Collaro turntables).
The speakers attach to the rear of the unit for carrying and moving. When removed, they must be connected to the back panel with the included RCA style speaker cables.
I serviced all of the controls, pots, switches, etc. , so that everything operates quietly and efficiently with no scratchy sounds. The speakers are 2 way and sound very good. Plenty of available volume with great fidelity. When I found this unit, someone had replaced one of the tweeters at some time and it was still still blown. So both speakers would sound the same, I decided to replace both tweeters...one on each side...with age appropriate tweeters that are of the same construction as the originals (sealed back Alnico magnet tweeters). They sound great!
There is an input on the rear of the unit for connecting and auxiliary device. It can be a tuner, tape player, CD, etc. Just push the switch to Aux and it plays that channel.

When I found this unit, the Garrard turntable that was in it was in rough shape and beyond repair. So, I installed another Garrard unit that is far superior to the one that came with this unit. By a total coincidence, the model of the Garrard turntable that I transplanted here....is 440m. It is a fully automatic unit with 3 platter speeds, 33 - 45- 78. The tonearm has adjustments for tracking force as well as antiskating. It has a Pickering V15 cartridge with a brand new stylus installed. The unit has been serviced and should provide years of worry free service.
Because of a slight difference in the wiring harness, the unit must be switched on/off with the manual switch.
The auto off switch has been bypassed. It just means that when you are done listening to records, you turn off the amp (from the manual on position to the auto off position).
